So your having a hard time starting an exercise programme? Your not alone. Research indicates that only 54 percent of Australians do enough exercise to achieve a health benefit. The good news is that it is not as hard as you may think.
Studies have revealed that if you exercise at least three times a week over 6 weeks, the decision to exercise becomes almost automatic. Initially we commence exercising because of an external source, for example a doctor, a partner, or a health condition. Over a short period of time this tends to shift to an internal focus because of the positive effects we receive from exercise. One of the most positive responses to exercise is the release of serotonin. This neuro-transmitter enhances our mood greatly.
So how do you get started? First of all you need a stimulus. This may be as simple as leaving your exercise clothes on the end of your bed before you go to sleep so when you wake up in the morning you are reminded to exercise. Then you need to establish a routine. Block out time on at least 3 days in the week to exercise and follow through.
It is OK not feel super motivated when embarking on your exercise programme. All you have to do is start and serotonin will take care of the rest. 10 minutes into your session you should be feeling good and when you finish you will be proud of yourself.
It is essential to remember how this feels so it is easier to back up for your next exercise session. If you are not enjoying your exercise session at all, find another form of exercise to try, don’t give in!
Until next time
